Top 10 Hidden Gems In The World

Salar De Uyuni
This is the world’s largest salt flat, situated in the southwest of Bolivia and stretching to the size of 4,086 square miles, it’s hiding in plain sight as a huge location with small tourism industry. This is mostly because it’s a large salt flat with not a whole lot to see, that is of course, until you look further. It’s a breeding ground for several species of pink flamingos, has a unique train cemetery and hotels made out of salt blocks. The most spectacular things about this place though is the sheer expanse of salt flat, barely fluctuating in height at all, and ranging for as far as the eye can see. Take a car of a bike and go on a road trip across the flats and camp along the way – the views are amazing.
Whale Island, Veitnam
Hidden away 2 hours North of Nha Trang is the ultimate desert island getaway, this location has the seclusion from a busy town and small enough tourism industry to leave it relatively untouched. Lined with coconut trees, coral and clear blue waters, you can stay on bungalows on the beach, eating fresh fish everyday and bathing in the sun and water that this beautiful slice of paradise has to offer. Explore coral reefs and sail throughout the day, you’ll be sure to be left alone to relax and enjoy the peace and freedom from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Gullfoss Falls, Þingvellir and the geysers of Haukadalur, Iceland
Tucked away from the mainstream tourist destinations in the world, is Iceland, which is a few hours flight from anywhere, making it one of the best places in the world to find a hidden gem or 2. As one of the greenest countries in the world, you’re surrounded my largely untouched natural beauties like the golden circle; a national park, geysers and spectacular waterfalls. Iceland is starting to pick up the pace in the tourism industry as more and more people realize how beautiful the place is and how much there is to see and do there, that you can’t do anywhere else.
Stone Forest, Yakutsk, Russia
Hidden in the expanse of Russia, this incredible, little known sight of natural stone formations are absolutely breathtaking. It’s mostly popular with young scientists willing to make the mammoth 4 day trip from Moscow consisting of a very long flight and a 3 day long boat riding costing about $500. If you’re looking for a getaway to a land rarely visited then look no further as this truly out of the way.
Tegalalang Rice Terrace, Bali
Located on the north-south road from Kintamani and Ubud in Bali is this spectacular example of the typical beauty of the Balinese countryside. Flooded rice fields lined with coconut groves, on the base of a clear blue sky, make this one of the most breathtaking locations, undamaged by herds of tourists. The towns roads are surrounded by colorful wooden carvings of flowers and animals, handmade by the locals, and making the trip to Tegalalang all that more special.
Socotra Island, Yemen
Amazingly, 1/3 of the plant life on this island is found nowhere else on the planet, it’s no wonder that Socotra is described as the most alien-looking island on the Earth. This Island has been separated from Africa for roughly 6 million years and the harsh climate plays host to this magnificent rare wildlife and limestone mountains. The isolation is enough in itself to make this the perfect island retreat, but when you couple that with the fact that there’s no roads or hotels due this being a Natural World Heritage site, you’re left with the awesome destination for a bit of eco-tourism.
Karst Mountains, China
Citied as one of the most inspirational spots for poets and artists around the world, the Karst Mountains is a range of rock formations of all shapes and sizes along the Li River in China, which can be best seen from the small town of Yangshuo, near Guilin. This impressive natural wonder of China is best explored via bike, foot and boat, away from any other tourists that may be staying in the area.
Devetashka Cave, Bulgaria
Discovered only 90 years ago, it has recently been made into a national landmark of Bulgaria for being one of the biggest caves in Europe. Natural light floods the cave through the open ceiling that you can bungee jump off of, making this a rather unique cave. The entrance is 35m wide and 30m high with the central hall branching off in 2 directions to a length of 2500m long at it’s longest point. Following the path of a small river, you’ll find natural lakes and waterfalls running out into the river Osam. This hidden gem was once considered so secret that it was once even used as a secret military base.
Badab-e Surt Spring, Mazandaran, Iran
When you think of hidden gems or secret hideaways, you typically don’t think of countries like Iran, and that’s what makes this place so good – there’s almost nobody there! This beautiful, red, orange and yellow spring produces naturally carbonated mineral water in a range of stepped travertine terrace pools in the Mazandaran Province of northern Iran. Known for the waters healing powers of skin diseases, this untouched natural wonder makes for some of the best exploration, as the tourism industry is almost non existent in Iran.
Mount Roraima, South America
This tabletop mountain borders Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana, is the highest peak in Guyana’s Highland Range and is well known for its rare and unique plant life and rain almost every day of the year. The surface of the summit is mostly comprised of bare sandstone and a small dispersion of bushes and algae, making this a particularly harsh environment to spend too much time in. The mountain holds special significance for the local indigenous people and is steeped full of history, myth, legend and intrigue. The sheer sides of the mountain make it particularly hard to ascend, so even though it is a famous mountain, it’s largely untouched from a barrage of tourists, making it an ideal getaway location.
